The understand page represents verbal applications of knowledge such as applying and analyzing. This is when students take their knowledge and think about how to apply it to a new problem. Basically you take what you know and use it figure out new information.
To test your knowledge questions will typically be:
- compare and contrast between two subjects
- questions of how
, what
, why
, and who
- draw or describe a process
- sort information into categories
The testing of understanding goes beyond your abilities to retrieve information to start to see how you think and use your knowledge in a new way. Understanding questions make you think about what you know, your past experiences, and how you come up with a solution. Not directly but your opinion on a subject starts to show in your answers as to whether you agree or disagree with a subject. Things that can help you to have a better understanding are the following:
- Read and study but as you do make lists of vocabulary and catagorize them into groups (helpful for comparing and contrasting of ideas).
- Make an outline of the subject you are studying.
- Then start to think
how
does this fit into my world
how
does the information fit in with what I already know.
- Then take your outline and think
why
is this important.
Who
would need to know this type of information.
What
kind of job would they have.
- Practice making drawings of a subject you may read read the information but if you draw your own images you may gain some insight.
- other activities that might help you
