Description:

In this unit you will start to use the online textbook. The online textbook is basically an electronic version of a textbook. The links provided to the textbook will take you to a page with a picture of three textbooks. For this class we will be using the center one (click here for image). It will allow you to read information and help you to do the assignments. Your assignments will be short writing assignments and I will teach you what I expect from you. Below is an outline of what you will be learning about:

1.
Learning the different fields of Earth science which are:

  • Astronomy
  • Geology
  • Hydrology
  • Meteorology
2.
Learn the scientific method used by scientists to learn about the Earth.
3.
Discover how to read maps and learn how scientists use them.
4.
Recognize major process of Earth science:

  • Convection
  • Equilibrium
  • Recycling
  • Conservation of Energy and Matter

For a more in depth outline of what is expected check the outline/review for this unit. It will give you an idea of what you need to learn before you start to do this unit.

In the image at right you can see three words associated with three symbols. The words and symbols demonstrate processes found in Earth science. Equilibrium means that all of the forces are equal and something is balanced. Convection is a process that circulates material. A cycling process is also a circular process but typically the material changes as it goes through a cycle.

Going Further

The following links are places you can go to learn more and go more in depth on the content standards and content objectives.

Content Objective:
1. Earth Science-A study of the Earth from outer space, our atmosphere, to were we live, to the process underneath our feet.
  2. The scientific method-An analytical method to observing and testing the world we live in.
The Branching of Earth Science-Learn how the study of the Earth is broken down into spheres in which scientist focus on one aspect of Earth science.
  3. Cartography-Learn about the science of mapmaking.
4.
Remote Sensing-How scientists are currently studying the Earth.
Language Objective:
1.
Students will be able to discus a career in Earth science.
  2. Students will be tested on the nature of Earth science, mapping the Earth, and Earth processes.
  3.
Students will be able to write about the scientific method and remote sensing.

4.
Students will be able to interpret a topographic map.
