Description:

In this unit we will take a look at some basic scientific tools. The goals for this unit are for you to have a better understanding navigating blackboard and of the following:

  • Using powers of ten and International Standard of Units (SI).
  • The base units of measurement.
  • The basic physical properties of matter.

For a more in depth outline of what is expected check the outline/review for this unit. It will give you an idea of what you need to learn before you start to do this unit.

In the picture below it depicts several things. You will need to click on it to see it at full size. In the upper left hand corner you can see water in its three states of matter; a solid, a liquid, and a gas.

In the lower left hand side you can see the three states of matter separated by arrows the red arrows represent heat energy added and the blue arrows mean heat energy is removed. In the lower right you can see a graph of temperature vs heat energy for water. Finally in the upper right hand side you can see some units base units of measurement which is critical to understanding science in general.

Going Further

The following links are places you can go to learn more and go more in depth on the content standards and content objectives.

Content Objective:
1. Scientific Notation-A universal method for writing small or large numbers in an abbreviated manner.
  2.
International System of Units (SI)-A universal method for measuring physical properties in science.

  3. Physical States of Matter-A property of matter related to temperature and heat energy and determines if a substance is a solid, liquid, or gas.
Language Objective:
1.
Students will discus how scientific notation ties into international system of units.
  2. Students will be tested on the units of measurement based on the SI system.
3.
Students will be able to interpret a graph showing a temperature/heat energy curve for an unknown substance.
