Course Descriptions: Middle School
MS Math 1.1 - Semester 1 of Middle School Math is the first course in a two part series designed to provide students with the foundation in basic math skills that will prepare them for success in pre-algebra. This course has units of study that cover the following topics: organizing and presenting data, number theory and algebraic reasoning, integers and rational numbers, operations with rational numbers, proportional reasoning, and percent.
MS Math 1.2 - Semester 2 of Middle School Math is the second course in a two part series designed to provide students with the foundation in basic math skills that will prepare them for success in pre-algebra. This course has units of study that cover the following topics: plane figures, perimeter, circumference, area, volume, surface area, probability, multi-step equations, inequalities, graphs, and functions.
MS Reading/Literature 1 - Strategies and skills in reading for meaning
are taught and emphasized throughout this course; media literacy and
plagiarism are additional topics covered. An introduction to the basic
components of plot, theme, characters, setting, and point of view are
interspersed with basic writing skills and introductory literary analysis.
Various genres, plus poetry and novels are explored. Discussion boards
are used to explore various topics throughout this course, and a reading
log and several essays are required assignments.

MS Science - The Middle School Science course draws from the principles
of several scientific specialties-earth science, physical science, biology,
chemistry, and physics-and organize the material around thematic units.
Common themes include systems, models, energy, patterns, change, and
constancy. Appropriate aspects from each specialty are used to investigate
applications of the theme.
MS Social Studies - This middle school social studies course focuses on the geography and history of the United States. Students will study the geography of the United States, Native American groups, early exploration and settlement, the American Revolution, the Civil War, and the westward movement in the 1800's. Student coursework will include reading online materials, watching online videos, completing creative projects and writing short essays. Various grade levels will be accommodated through differentiated instruction. Requires a robust computer/broadband connection for streaming video or a DVD player.
Return to course list MS Writing - Composition courses focus on a student's writing skills,
and develop the student's ability to compose different types of papers
for different purposes and audiences. Descriptive, narrative, persuasive,
or expositive styles may all be explored and practiced as students write
paragraphs, essays, letters, applications, formal documented papers,
or technical reports. Although creative writing opportunities may be
presented, the focus of composition courses usually remains on non-fiction,
scholarly, or formal writing.
